For the run of Piccadilly windows during the 2020 Christmas Season, a season like no other due to prevailing global circumstances, inspiration was taken from the past; embodying Ebenezer Scrooge and looking back at festive moments from Fortnum's Christmases over time. This overarching these was interwoven with the community spirit and thoughtfulness invoked by the Covid-19 pandemic, rejoicing in and revisiting all the happy Christmases Fortnum’s had been so fortunate to celebrate as a brand along with their loyal customers.

The visual brief was simple, to bring joy to the world when it was needed most, inspired by festive brochures throughout Fortnum's 313-year history. Iconic brochure front covers were to be recreated in three-dimensional form, with each merry, bright and brilliantly entertaining seasonal scene brimming with Fortnum’s sparkling Christmas heritage. With 313-years of front covers to choose from, it was quite the task to whittle down to just eight to feature in the Store’s iconic Piccadilly window run.

The journey started with a wonderful sleigh ride in 1930, before strolling through 1934, 1936, 1957, 1962, 2008, 2015 and ending the journey in a rather exceptional 2020. Showcasing hours of meticulous craftsmanship, using hand sculpting, painting, lighting and bespoke engineering – each window featured the original brochure cover alongside a larger-than-life, sparkling depiction to wonderfully bringing each front cover to life.

Along Duke Street, the windows celebrated the season’s feastings, packed with every delicious item required for the big day, starting with Christmas morning breakfast delights through to showstopper puddings and pies, right up to after dinner tipples. Head over here to view.

But that’s not all; the famous façade of the Store was also turned into one gigantic advent calendar. From the beginning of December, the celebrations counting down to Christmas were on a grander scale than ever before – and if nothing else, you were able to use the store façade to tell both the date and time, thanks the merry clock, retuned to play a collection of festive melodies on the hour, giving you no excuses to leave your Christmas shopping to the last minute.
