Artist Edward Bawden first illustrated the witty and playful feline helpers during Fortnum’s Christmas campaign in 1958, a light-hearted showcase of the brand’s festive collection. Bawden’s work continues to inspire Fortnum’s some 61 years later, with the lovable feline helpers clad in Fortnum’s famous red-coats and offered a behind-the-scenes scoop into the Christmas preparations that go on that this most famous of corner shops.

Cogs, gold wheels, intricate pipes and whirring machinery, the windows set out to honour the extraordinary detail that goes into making a Fortnum’s Christmas so special, from crackers with a pitch-perfect bang to salmon that’s just the right shade of pink. Each window animatingly operated by the cats, depicted a fictional story of the creation of products including the famous hampers, mince pies, potted stilton, champagne and yule logs.

The windows, expertly brought to life by George and the imaginative visual team, were the result of many months of painstaking work designing, storyboarding and conceptualising. Once the planning phase was finalised, the concepts were sent to the prop makers and the entire scheme was constructed before being transported back to the flagship store and installed in intensive sessions long into the night.

CHRISTMAS 2019

For Christmas 2019, cats took centre stage in eight festive displays, spread across Fortnum’s centre-piece Piccadilly window run. A play on the word “catalogue”, the displays were designed in-house by George and the Visual team and acted as a nod towards Fortnum’s long-running association with lovable moggies.
