The new design for the biscuits was based around a 1920s-style square tin and the design depicts quirky English folklore from each county the biscuit within originates, including Cornwall, Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Shropshire. Drawing inspiration from local legends, each traditional biscuit had a tale to tell – from the Red Rose of Lancashire to the Mermaid of Padstow.

The flowing composition wraps around the biscuit tin, with each corner depicting a different county; the Cornish coastline drifts into Yorkshire farmland, whilst the Lancashire plains roll into Shropshire hills. Local folklore depicted in the illustration includes the tale of a mermaid’s unrequited love for a Cornish sailor that ends in bitter revenge, the superstition of tolling the famous ‘Black Tom’ bell of Dewsbury in Yorkshire to ward off evil spirits at Christmas to the ancient tradition of dressing wells with floral garlands in Lancashire and the myth of a malevolent giant in Shrewsbury.

George was tasked with creating a window that would promote this reimagined classic and with such rich antiquity behind each biscuit, along with the beauty in the packaging itself, it was not hard to focus on this point. Playing with the artwork, George was able to transform the packing into a three-dimensional structure, building layers to create visual depth. George added an additional decorative boarder to the glass, which is featured on the tin and inspired by a traditional serving plate. The outcome provided a strong store window to engage customers visually whilst conveying the stories and myths associated with these traditional biscuits.

COUNTY BISCUIT

Whilst their wonderful County Biscuit Tin – a celebration of old English recipes from around the country – had been a popular Fortnum’s staple, in 2019 the retailer thought it was time to revamp the packaging and even add a new member to the trio of famous biscuits.
