Fortnum & Mason has become synonymous with the holiday season, and with its roots firmly as a grocer, supplying an array of luxuries, appealing foodstuff, and tempting tipples is built into their DNA. The Christmas scheme is intentionally designed to invoke feelings of nostalgia in the adults, and excitement and wonder to the younger onlookers, including details that you may not notice at first glance, but which the experienced designers know all about.
In 2018, George and the visual team channelled the decadence of Christmas cuisine into the Fortnum’s eight Iconic windows, which a scheme aimed at bringing life and theatre to food. The first window of the run was designed to entice the public into the wine and spirits hall, with the spectacle of a clinking and popping Christmas tree made entirely from champagne glasses. You could hear the fizz from miles away!
The second window install, was dedicated to the crowning glory of every Christmas table - the Turkey itself. In true style, it was bursting forth of a giant cracker, surrounded by glittering trimmings and spirals to catch the eye.

Whilst the remaining run of Piccadilly windows consisted of several themes, from a metallic lobster being revealed from under a huge cloche, surrounded by gold prawns all standing to attention to a giant Christmas pudding spilling Fortnum’s penny coins. Last but by no means least, was the flock of mince pies with flapping wings pulling a sleigh, led by a pie with a red, shiny cherry on top – a tasty nod to Rudolph himself.
