The department manager or “shop keeper” as they are known at IKEA, would select a specific product they wanted to highlight, often based on sales data. From there is it was over to George to produce some of his retail theatre. On this occasion, for the home organisation department’s Vitality Area, George was to develop a design around the featured product being a “BLASKA”, a simple white laundry basket.
Playing on the function of the item, George’s immediate idea was to create a fun retro Laundrette experience, reimagining a community laundrette as a colourful and immersive space.
The concept was brought to life with punchy bright colours, a classic black and white chequered floor vinyl and graphics being created for existing display units to reassemble pop art styled washing machines. The frame above the display was also utilised to feature a green pegged clothes line, capturing the spirit of an old school launderette with a playful twist.

Whilst working for IKEA, it was George’s reasonability to create exciting touch points throughout the store and within departments, to educate customers, promote specific events and trends but to also persuade them into that impulse purchase. Designing these promotional zones from initial concept through to the hands-on final installation was an aspect of the role George thoroughly enjoyed.
