SPÄNST brings with it a crispness of sporty materials across different mediums, between essential apparel and furniture. The collection involved statement storage pieces, like a transparent shoebox, a clothing rack and a mesh wardrobe. Not only that, but SPÄNST saw the release of the first-ever IKEA skateboard, for those with a proclivity for being especially active.

George’s job on the Home Furnishing & Retail Design team at IKEA involved a combination of planning, project management, and hands on implementing to achieve a constant flow of inspiring and creative content throughout the store. With this in mind and offering a nod to Chris’s background in street style and his passion for skating, George reimagined what the launch area would look like if it was a Skate Park. Taking the core DNA of the collection and applying it to the space using urban references.

Smart materials, monochrome colours with graphic elements were used in the concept for the area, whilst keeping the space unique and eco-friendly, with surfaces made from plywood. The display cubes were even imaginatively reworked into skate ramps to fit the overall impression. The thought behind the collection was to reimagine how the younger and more aesthetic conscience consumer may want to organise their wardrobe and accessories their home. The look George designed and implemented championed that ideology whilst creating and an engaging visual display.

You don’t just want to store items that reflect your identity - you want to put them on display - for you to admire and for the world to see. At IKEA, many collaborations stem from a source of endless curiosity. Designed in collaboration with Chris Stamp, the LA-based fashion designer, the SPÄNST range (meaning elasticity in Swedish) embodied what it means to organise and display prized possessions.  A limited-edition collection, SPÄNST explores how to furnish the urban nests of today. Exploring the changing needs of young homes, with a special focus on active, urban lifestyle.
